Power just came up about 30 minutes ago after being out since Wednesday (3 days).  Now I get to clean out the stinky refrigerator.

ST. LOUIS STORM

Quite an evening in the St. Louis metro area!

This is the radar image from around the time the storms came through. Although other non-precipitation echoes make it difficult to see the whole way across, the very impressive gust front (leading edge of the strong winds) is quite evident out ahead of the main precipitation cores as a skinny blue-green line. This article even mentions the gust front. A gust front out ahead of a thunderstorm is not as unusual as the article implies, but this one was particularly intense and widespread.

Here are the observations from Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.

The radar image is at 2356z (6:56pm CDT), two minutes after the first strong gust to 50+ mph at the airport (yellow dot on the radar).

Winds had been light just a few minutes prior. Note also the remarks of CB DSNT N-NE -- cumulonimbus distant north-northeast -- indicating that the core of the storm hadn't arrived yet, which was consistent with what the radar was showing.

About 10-15 minutes later the peak gust of 55 mph occurred (winds were undoubtedly higher elsewhere in the area based on damage reports) along with the onset of rain and lightning.

Winds appear to have been sustained at 33+ mph for a half an hour! (It's possible that they briefly dropped below that between observations but for the most part were within several mph of gale/tropical storm force the whole time.) Peak sustained wind was 40 mph.

Then, after frequent to continuous lightning, the storms moved away, and the wind went to dead calm.

Apr. 22nd, 2006 @ 04:21 pm Why I don't want to get out of bed
my eyes avoid the mirror
they hate what they see

my ears throb to each sound
they don't want to listen

my back slouches in defeat
it doesn't want to support me

my knees cringe with each step
they can't take the burden

my lungs refuse air
they don't want me to breathe

my stomach denies food
return to sender, no more

my mind wants to shut down
it won't accept hope

my heart and soul want to live
but my body wants to die

Apr. 19th, 2006 @ 02:30 pm A year?
Can't believe it's been nearly a year since I posted an entry on here. Things haven't been good but they haven't been bad either... just there I guess. It's so hard for me to write about the daily grind sometimes because I just want to escape from it. I've only managed to get small 2-3 month contracts at a time since my first last May. Right now I'm between contracts and this time always leaves me feeling worthless and all those fun feelings.

Anyhow, I am alive and missing most of the people who mean anything in my life. Good day.

President Bush & environmental issues

Release delayed until after elections, EPA reportedly had concerns

I'd vote him out even if these were the only strikes against him. The world and its creatures are far more important that any company's "trouble".

I really hope Kerry steps it up when he comes here for the debate Friday. How I wish I could attend.
